Seeing that we have a lot of comments on our Facebook and LinkedIn posts on “Why we recommend people against upgrading to Windows 10”, we decided to help those who have already fallen over to the “dark side” and are having problem with Windows 10.

There is a way for you to rollback from Windows 10 back to Windows 7 or 8 if you upgrade directly, and that is only if you do so within 30 days. There is a hack to extend the period to beyond 30 days however for today we will just talk about the basic.

Step 1 – Backup

Before attempting any rollback, make sure you have backup all your documents and files. Doing anything to the operating system is a big thing and you may lose data along the way.

If you’ve added any user accounts since upgrading you’ll have to sign out of them and then remove them from the main account before you can downgrade.

Step 2 – Recovery

When you upgraded to Windows 10 on a PC that already has Windows, there should be a folder called Windows.old which holds your old OS system files. If you deleted or remove it, you will not be able to recover back.

First open the Windows Start menu by clicking on the icon in the bottom left of the screen. Select Settings from the menu.

Look for Update & Security.

On the list of options at the left, click on Recovery. Next choose the option Go back to Windows X, which will be the version of your Windows prior to the upgrade.

Next a feedback form will appear asking why you choose to rollback, just put whatever reason you want and click next.

There will be a final confirmation page for the rollback. They will remind you that if you have a password on your previous Windows version, you will need it to log back in when it is rollback. If everything is alright, click next to start the rollback.

Depending on your computer, it may take anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 and an half hours. After you have resume back to the previous Windows OS, check that all your documents are intact and recover from the backup done in step 1 if they are missing.

If you know of people who are suffering from Windows 10’s problems, help them recover back to their previous Windows version by sending them to this post.
