This is part 2 of a follow up article to the topic “Protect Yourself From Spam and Email Virus”, for part 1 you can refer to them over here.

Always verify with the sender on the emails attachment and links if you have any doubts. There is this incident where we send one of our clients a questionnaire on their network for an upcoming project and the HR executive who receive it does not have any idea of the project. She call us to verify we are the one asking for the information before sending them over. We will like to think we have train our clients well in this aspect!

One of the more subtle signs is the time and date the email is sent out. Is it sent at a weird time like middle of the night?

Hosted Gateway Filter

This is something you can install to filter out spam and email virus, to prevent them from reaching your email server or computer. If you recall, we find the fake HSBC letter in our Total Email Protection quarantine box, meaning it never reaches our email server or computer at all. Upon implementing the Total Email Protection for 1 of our clients, we are able to prevent 90% of such emails reaching employees who are prone to clicking links without checking first, reducing their infection rate from 3 cases per month to 0 now! Your cooperative employees also benefits from a gateway filter as it can remove the numerous spams they will face on a daily basis.

You can still fall back on to your computer’s antivirus to help you protect against virus, do take note you should be using business edition instead of free or consumer edition. The benefits of a paid business edition is that they do real time detection. For effective protection, look for one that includes anti-phishing and internet content. Alternatively we do provide and manage anti virus for our clients, keeping them working and up to date.
