All of us know backup is important, however most of the time it is place under “Not Urgent Now, But Important” category. A financial planner friend once said this “Backup is like insurance or a parachute. You should have it when you don’t need it. By the time you need it and don’t have it, it is too late”
To keep us reminded of how important backup is, here are some cases studies we have came across where they wished they had a working backup in place beforehand.
When speaking of water disaster, people always thought of natural disasters like tsunami or flood which luckily for us is absent in Singapore except for “pooling”. Have you had a case where you are too engross with your work on the laptop and reach out for that cup of coffee on your desk, only to miss it by an inch and topple the drink all over your laptop? Welcome to the “engross boss” case! We call it that because it happen most commonly to busy executives, managers or bosses. Sadly to say, when they come to us, we cannot guarantee any recovery because of the water damage. Data losses doesn’t care what your rank, title or pay grade is, when it happens, it happens.
Employee Checking Out “Funny/Sexy/etc” Email Link
People are the weakest link when it comes to security, we may have all the preventive measures however the virus can still sneak in via social engineering or just plain carelessness of the user. The company in this case study has one of their department public folders and files replaced with fake copies that infect even more computers when clicked upon.
It took a day of downtime for the whole network to disinfected and another additional day to retrieve the data via hard drive recovery, and not all of the data are recovered. They are lucky it is still a mild virus as compare to the infamous cryptolocker virus which has ZERO percent of recovery unless you have a working backup or pay the random.
Christmas Eve Server Hard Drive Failure
On a certain Christmas eve, a server that is due for replacement in a month time suddenly break down and the hard drive is unable to work. The IT executive who was in charge thought it shouldn’t be an issue, since they have backup the data via tapes on a daily basis. Alas when he try to recover the data from the tape, the recovery failed and the backup have not been working properly even though no alert was given. He has to disassemble the hard drive out from the server and rush down to Sim Lim Square to get someone to retrieve the data out. It cost the company 1 week and a few thousands dollars to get the data back.
This case study is very memorable to our founder, as he was that IT executive who had to find out on that day how a non working, non reporting backup can make an impact on data protection planning. Since then he decided to make sure that all companies he serve had a good and working data protection plan in place, so it will not happen to anyone else again.
